How are discounts calculated?
A percentage discount takes that share off the original price. Stacked discounts multiply, they don't add.
Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100)
Savings = price − sale price
Discount % = savings ÷ price × 100
40% + extra 10% = 1 − 0.6 × 0.9 = 46% off
Why “40% + 10%” isn't 50% off
The extra 10% comes off the already reduced price. On ₹1,000, 40% off leaves ₹600, and 10% of ₹600 is ₹60, so you pay ₹540: a total discount of 46%.
Checking a sale
Use “Find the discount %” to see what an offer really saves. A ₹2,499 item at ₹1,799 is 28% off, whatever the banner says.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.8. ₹1,500 with 20% off is ₹1,200; you save ₹300.
How do I find the discount percentage?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. (₹2,000 − ₹1,500) ÷ ₹2,000 × 100 = 25%.
Is 50% + 50% off free?
No. Half off and then half off again leaves a quarter of the price: 75% off in total.
