Exponent rules

aⁿ means a multiplied by itself n times. The rules extend this to zero, negative and fractional powers:

aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ

(aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐⁿ

a⁰ = 1

a⁻ⁿ = 1 ÷ aⁿ

a^(1/n) = ⁿ√a

Negative exponents

A negative exponent means “one over”: 2⁻³ = 1 ÷ 2³ = 1/8 = 0.125.

Fractional exponents

The bottom of the fraction is a root and the top is a power: 8^(2/3) = (∛8)² = 2² = 4.

Frequently asked questions

What is any number to the power 0?

1, for any non-zero number. It follows from aⁿ ÷ aⁿ = aⁿ⁻ⁿ = a⁰ = 1.

What is 2 to the power 10?

1,024. That's why 1 kilobyte is sometimes counted as 1,024 bytes.

How do I solve for the exponent?

Use logarithms: if aⁿ = x, then n = log(x) ÷ log(a). Choose “The exponent n” above.
