How are numbers written in words in India?
The Indian system groups digits as thousand, lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000). The international system uses thousand, million (10,00,000) and billion (100 crore).
1,25,050 = One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand Fifty
12,50,00,000 = Twelve Crore Fifty Lakh = 125 million
Writing a cheque
Write the amount in words starting right next to 'Rupees' and end with 'Only' so nothing can be added. Write paise in words too ('and Fifty Paise Only'), and make sure the words match the figures exactly, or the bank may return the cheque.
Lakh and million
1 lakh = 100 thousand; 10 lakh = 1 million; 1 crore = 10 million; 100 crore = 1 billion. Our Lakh to Million Converter switches between the two systems.
