How is an average calculated?
The average (arithmetic mean) shares the total equally across all values:
Average = sum of values ÷ number of values
Weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ weights
Example: average marks
Marks of 72, 85, 90, 64 and 78 add up to 389. Dividing by 5 subjects gives an average of 77.8.
When to use a weighted average
Use weights when some values count more than others: exam components worth different percentages, or prices bought in different quantities. A final exam worth 50% should pull the result more than a test worth 20%.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 4, 8 and 9 is 21 ÷ 3 = 7.
Is the average the same as the median?
Not always. The average uses every value, so one very large or small number can pull it. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted.
Can I average percentages?
Only if each percentage is out of the same total. Otherwise, use a weighted average with the totals as weights.
