The US Navy method
The US Navy formula estimates body fat from body circumferences and height (in cm), usually within 3–4% of lab methods:
Men: 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077·log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456·log₁₀(height)) − 450
Women: 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004·log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.221·log₁₀(height)) − 450
Measuring correctly
Use a soft tape, keep it level and snug without squeezing, and measure in the morning before eating. Take each measurement twice and use the average.
Why body fat beats BMI
BMI only uses height and weight, so a muscular person can be called overweight. Body fat percentage separates fat from muscle, giving a truer picture of health and fitness progress.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Roughly 21–31% for women and 14–24% for men, depending on age and fitness. Athletes are often lower.
How accurate is the Navy method?
Usually within 3–4 percentage points of DEXA scans for most adults. Consistent measuring matters more than the exact number when tracking progress.
Why do women have more body fat?
Women need more essential fat for hormones and reproduction, so healthy ranges are about 8 points higher than men's.
