Ideal weight formulas
Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above it:
Robinson: 52 kg (men) / 49 kg (women) + 1.9 / 1.7 kg per inch
Miller: 56.2 / 53.1 kg + 1.41 / 1.36 kg per inch
Devine: 50 / 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch
Hamwi: 48 / 45.5 kg + 2.7 / 2.2 kg per inch
Why the formulas disagree
They were built from different data for different purposes: Devine's was made to dose medicines, not to set weight goals. Treat the spread as a rough target zone rather than one perfect number.
A range is better than one number
Muscle, bone structure and age all change what's healthy for you. The healthy BMI range gives a wider, evidence-based band. For Indian adults, the upper healthy BMI is 22.9 rather than 24.9.

Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal weight for 5 ft 6 in?
For men, the four formulas give about 63–65 kg; for women about 59–61 kg. A healthy BMI range at that height is roughly 52–70 kg.
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
None is perfect. Robinson and Miller are newer and often closer to healthy averages; Devine is the one doctors use for drug doses. Using the healthy BMI range is usually more practical.
Do these formulas work for children or very short adults?
No. They were designed for adults around 5 ft and taller. Children need age-based growth charts.
What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 3 in woman in kg?
About 52–57 kg by the four formulas, and roughly 47–64 kg for a healthy BMI. Using the Indian BMI cut-off of 23, the healthy upper limit is about 58.6 kg.
What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 8 in man in kg?
About 67–70 kg by the four formulas, and roughly 55–74 kg for a healthy BMI. Using the Indian BMI cut-off of 23, the healthy upper limit is about 68.3 kg.
