How the conversion works
Every unit is converted through the byte. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) step by 1,000; binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) step by 1,024.
MB = GB × 1,000
1 GB = 1,000 MB
Why a 1 TB drive shows 931 GB
Drive makers use decimal units: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024 three times and shows the result as “GB”, which is really GiB: about 931.
Bits vs bytes
A lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes. Internet speed is in megabits (Mb), file sizes in megabytes (MB); divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.
