How the conversion works
Weight and volume are linked by density: how many grams one millilitre of something weighs. Water is 1 g/mL, so 1 kg of water is exactly 1 litre. For anything else, pick the substance.
L = kg × 1 (water)
1 kg = 1 L
Why 1 kg isn't always 1 litre
Oil is lighter than water, so 1 kg of cooking oil takes up about 1.09 litres. Honey is heavier, so 1 kg of honey is only about 0.70 litres.
Typical densities
Densities change a little with temperature and brand. The values here are typical; for exact work, use the density printed on the product or its data sheet.

Frequently asked questions
Is 1 kg equal to 1 litre?
Only for water (and liquids with the same density). For milk 1 kg is about 0.97 L, for oil about 1.09 L.
How many grams is 1 mL?
For water, 1 mL weighs 1 gram. For other substances, multiply millilitres by the density in g/mL.
How do I convert litres of petrol to kg?
Multiply litres by the density, about 0.745 kg/L for petrol. 10 litres of petrol weighs about 7.45 kg.
