What is the density formula?
Density is mass per unit volume. Rearranging the same formula gives mass or volume.
Density ρ = mass ÷ volume
Mass = density × volume · Volume = mass ÷ density
1 g/cm³ = 1 kg/L = 1,000 kg/m³
Weight of petrol and diesel
Fuel is sold by volume. Under the BS-VI standard, petrol's density at 15 °C must be 720–775 kg/m³, so a litre weighs about 0.72–0.775 kg, and diesel 820–860 kg/m³, about 0.82–0.86 kg a litre. Pumps display the day's density; fuel expands slightly when warm.
Specific gravity
Specific gravity is density compared with water (1,000 kg/m³). Below 1, an object floats; above 1, it sinks. Ice at 0.917 floats with about 92% of it under water.

Frequently asked questions
What is the density of water?
About 1,000 kg/m³, or 1 g/cm³, which is why 1 litre of water weighs about 1 kg. It's highest at 4 °C.
How much does 1 litre of petrol weigh?
About 0.74–0.75 kg on average; BS-VI petrol must be 720–775 kg/m³ at 15 °C.
How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?
Multiply by 1,000. Steel at 7.85 g/cm³ is 7,850 kg/m³.
