Volume formulas
Volume is the space inside a 3D shape. 1 cubic metre holds exactly 1,000 litres.
Box = length × width × height
Cylinder = π × r² × h
Sphere = 4⁄3 × π × r³
Cone = ⅓ × π × r² × h
1 m³ = 1,000 L = 35.31 ft³
Water tank capacity
For a round tank, measure the inside diameter and halve it for the radius, then choose Cylinder. A tank 1 m across and 1.2 m tall holds π × 0.5² × 1.2 ≈ 0.94 m³, or about 940 litres. For a rectangular sump, use Box with the inside length, width and depth.
Radius or diameter?
The radius is half the diameter (the distance across through the centre). If you measured across the top of a drum or pipe, divide by 2 before entering it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the capacity of a water tank in litres?
Find the volume in cubic metres and multiply by 1,000. For a cylindrical tank: π × radius² × height. The calculator gives litres directly.
How many litres are in a cubic foot?
About 28.32 litres. A cubic metre is 1,000 litres, or 35.31 cubic feet.
What is the volume of a sphere?
4⁄3 × π × radius³. A ball with a 10 cm radius holds about 4.19 litres.
