How is electricity cost calculated?

One “unit” on your bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh): 1,000 watts running for one hour.

kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1,000

Monthly cost = kWh per day × days × rate per unit

Slab tariffs

Most Indian electricity boards charge in slabs: the first units are cheapest and the rate rises as use grows. Fixed charges and taxes are added on top. For a quick estimate, divide your last bill's total by the units used to get your average rate per unit.

Air conditioners and fridges

An AC's compressor and a fridge's motor cycle on and off, so they rarely draw full power all the time. A 5-star inverter AC may use 50–70% of its rated power on average; use that share for a closer estimate.

Frequently asked questions

How many units does a 1.5 ton AC use?

Roughly 1–1.8 units an hour depending on its star rating and settings, so 8–14 units for 8 hours a night.

How many units does a fan use?

A 75 W ceiling fan uses 0.075 units an hour, about 18 units a month at 8 hours a day. A BLDC fan uses less than half that.

What is the electricity rate per unit in India?

Domestic rates range from about ₹3 to ₹10 per unit depending on your state, board and slab. Check your latest bill.

How do I convert kWh to electricity units?

There's nothing to convert: one unit on an Indian electricity bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh).

How many watts does a 1.5 ton AC use?

A 1.5 ton AC removes about 5.3 kW of heat, but its electricity use is much lower: roughly 1,100–1,800 W while the compressor runs, depending on the star rating and whether it's an inverter model.
