Answer
Long division steps
- 78 ÷ 23 = 3 → 3 × 23 = 69, 78 − 69 = 9, bring down 6
- 96 ÷ 23 = 4 → 4 × 23 = 92, 96 − 92 = 4, bring down 5
- 45 ÷ 23 = 1 → 1 × 23 = 23, 45 − 23 = 22

How does long division work?
Work from left to right through the digits of the dividend, repeating four steps:
1. Divide: how many times does the divisor fit?
2. Multiply: quotient digit × divisor
3. Subtract: carry the remainder
4. Bring down the next digit
Dividend = quotient × divisor + remainder
Repeating decimals
If the remainder never reaches zero, the decimal repeats. Brackets mark the repeating part: 1 ÷ 7 = 0.(142857) means 0.142857142857… forever.
Checking your answer
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get back the dividend. The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor.

Frequently asked questions
What is the remainder?
What's left over after dividing as many whole times as possible. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2, because 3 × 5 = 15 and 17 − 15 = 2.
How do I write a remainder as a fraction?
Put the remainder over the divisor: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 2/5 = 3.4.
Can I divide decimals?
Multiply both numbers by the same power of 10 to make them whole first. 7.5 ÷ 0.25 is the same as 750 ÷ 25 = 30.
