How does rounding work?
Look at the digit just after the place you're rounding to. In the usual (half-up) method, 5 or more rounds up and 4 or less rounds down.
3.14159 → 2 d.p. → look at 1 → 3.14
2.675 → 2 d.p. → look at 5 → 2.68
1,250 → nearest 100 → 1,300
Banker's rounding
Round half to even sends exact halves to the nearest even digit: 2.5 → 2 and 3.5 → 4. Over many numbers the ups and downs cancel out, so totals stay unbiased. It's used in accounting and many programming languages.
Significant figures
Significant figures count from the first non-zero digit. 0.004567 to 2 significant figures is 0.0046; 45,678 to 2 significant figures is 46,000.

Frequently asked questions
How do I round to 2 decimal places?
Look at the third decimal place. If it's 5 or more, add 1 to the second; otherwise leave it. 4.876 → 4.88; 4.873 → 4.87.
What is 2.5 rounded to the nearest whole number?
3 with the usual half-up method, but 2 with banker's rounding (half to even).
Is rounding down the same as truncating?
For positive numbers, yes. For negative numbers they differ: −2.7 rounds down (floor) to −3 but truncates to −2.
