How is age eligibility worked out?

Exams fix a date on which your age is counted, such as 1 August of the exam year. You must have reached the minimum age by then and not yet passed the maximum (plus any relaxation).

Age on cut-off = cut-off date − date of birth

Eligible: minimum ≤ age, and age < maximum + relaxation + 1

Common age relaxations

For central government jobs and exams like UPSC and SSC, the upper age limit is usually relaxed by 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 5 years for SC/ST and 10 years for persons with benchmark disabilities (13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST). Ex-servicemen, J&K domiciles and others may get more. Always check the notification.

Read the birth-date range

Notifications often state eligibility as 'born not earlier than … and not later than …'. The range shown above uses the same rule, so you can match it against the notification directly.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'age as on 1 August' mean?

Your age is counted on 1 August of that year, regardless of when you apply or sit the exam. Enter that date as the cut-off.

If I turn 33 on the cut-off date, am I over 32?

Yes. On your 33rd birthday you are 33, which is above a maximum of 32. You must be under 33 on the cut-off date.

Is EWS given age relaxation?

Generally no, for central government exams. EWS candidates follow the general age limits.
