BSA formulas
Body surface area is estimated from weight (W, kg) and height (H, cm). Mosteller's is the simplest and most widely used:
Mosteller: √(H × W ÷ 3600)
Du Bois: 0.007184 × W^0.425 × H^0.725
Haycock: 0.024265 × W^0.5378 × H^0.3964
What BSA is used for
Doctors use BSA to scale chemotherapy and some other drug doses, to index heart output (cardiac index), and to adjust kidney function results. It reflects metabolic size better than weight alone.
Typical values
An average adult has a BSA of about 1.7 m²: around 1.9 m² for men and 1.6 m² for women. A newborn is about 0.25 m².
