How are bricks and mortar calculated?
Each brick plus its mortar joint covers a set area of the wall face. A 9-inch wall is two bricks thick. The space left between bricks is filled with mortar.
Bricks = wall area ÷ ((brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)) × layers
Dry mortar = wet mortar × 1.33 · Cement = dry ÷ (1 + sand parts)
Which mix to use
1:6 cement–sand mortar is standard for brickwork in load-bearing and partition walls. Use 1:4 for half-brick (4.5 inch) walls that need extra strength and for exposed work in wet areas.
Buying bricks
Bricks are sold by the thousand. Buy around 5% extra for breakage in transport and cutting; more for poor-quality bricks. Soak clay bricks before laying so they don't suck water out of the mortar.
