How is sand quantity calculated?

Volume is length × width × depth. Sand is sold by volume (cft, brass, m³) or weight (tonnes), so the calculator gives both.

Volume (cft) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft)

1 brass = 100 cft · 1 m³ = 35.31 cft · tonnes = m³ × density ÷ 1,000

Brass and cft

In Maharashtra and nearby states, sand and aggregate are sold by the brass, which is 100 cubic feet. Elsewhere suppliers quote per cft, per tonne or per truck.

Compaction

Loose filling sand settles when compacted and watered, often by 10–20%. Order a little more for filling and levelling work.

Frequently asked questions

How many cft is 1 brass?

100 cubic feet, about 2.83 m³.

How many tonnes of sand are in a brass?

About 4.5 tonnes of dry sand (2.83 m³ × 1.6 t/m³); more if the sand is wet.

Can I use this for gravel or soil?

Yes. Change the density: about 1,700 kg/m³ for gravel and 1,200–1,500 for soil.
