How are watts converted to amps?
Current depends on voltage and, for AC loads with motors or electronics, the power factor.
DC: I = P ÷ V · Single-phase AC: I = P ÷ (V × PF)
Three-phase AC: I = P ÷ (√3 × V_line × PF)
Indian supply voltages
Homes get 230 V single-phase at 50 Hz; three-phase connections are 415 V between phases. Inverter and solar batteries are usually 12, 24 or 48 V DC.
Using it for MCBs
Choose an MCB rated a little above the circuit's working current (about 1.25 times), and check that the wire can carry more than the MCB rating. A 2 kW geyser draws about 8.7 A at 230 V, so it typically goes on a 16 A circuit with 2.5 sq mm or 4 sq mm wire.

Frequently asked questions
How many amps is 1000 watts?
About 4.35 A at 230 V for a heater (PF 1), or 4.8 A for a motor load with PF 0.9. At 12 V DC it's 83.3 A.
What is power factor?
The ratio of real power (W) to apparent power (VA). Heaters and filament bulbs are 1; motors, ACs and LED drivers are lower, so they draw more current for the same watts.
How many watts can a 16 A socket take?
About 3,680 W at 230 V (16 × 230), though it's wise to stay below about 80% of that for continuous loads.
