The 75% Attendance Rule: How Many Classes Can You Miss?

The quick formula for classes to attend or skip, worked examples, and what to do if you fall short.

By Team Vind · Updated · 5 min read

“Minimum 75% attendance” decides whether you can sit your exams, at school and at most colleges in India. The rule sounds simple, but the arithmetic catches people out: one missed class costs much more than one class to make up. Here's how it works, the formula for exactly how many classes you need, and what to do if you're short.

Who needs 75%?

  • CBSE Class 10 and 12: at least 75% attendance is needed to appear in the board exams. CBSE can relax this by up to 25% only in genuine cases, such as a medical emergency or representing the country or state in sport, and only when the school sends the case with documents before CBSE's deadline.
  • Colleges and universities: most set 75%, often for each subject separately, as their rule for sitting the semester exams. Professional courses can have their own minimums for theory and practicals.

Check your institution's rule book: whether it counts per subject, whether labs count separately, and how it rounds.

The formula

Attendance % = classes attended ÷ classes held × 100

At 75%, every class you miss has to be balanced by three you attend. Working that through gives two handy formulas, where held and attended are your numbers so far:

Classes you must attend in a row = 3 × held − 4 × attended

Classes you can still miss = (4 × attended ÷ 3) − held, rounded down

Worked examples

HeldAttendedAttendanceTo reach 75%
805670%Attend the next 16
604270%Attend the next 12
906066.7%Attend the next 30
1007070%Attend the next 20
403075%Exactly at 75%: miss none
1209680%Can miss 8
1009090%Can miss 20

Notice how fast it grows: at 66.7% (60 of 90) you need 30 classes in a row. Falling behind early in the term is much easier to fix than falling behind late.

Planning for the rest of the term

If you know how many classes are left, work with the term total instead. Say 40 classes have been held, you've attended 26 (65%), and 60 are still to come:

  1. The term will have 40 + 60 = 100 classes, so 75% means attending 75.
  2. You have 26, so you need 49 of the remaining 60.
  3. That means you can miss at most 11 more classes all term.

If the number you need is more than the classes left, 75% is out of reach and it's time to talk to your college early.

If you're short of attendance

  • Act early. Speak to your class teacher, mentor or head of department as soon as you fall behind, not in the last week.
  • Submit leave applications and medical certificates on time. Medical leave usually doesn't count as present, but documents handed in when you returned are what make condonation possible. Certificates produced months later are often refused.
  • Ask about condonation. Many universities can condone a small shortage for illness or approved activities, sometimes for a fee. It's discretionary, never automatic.
  • Check each subject. Being above 75% overall doesn't help if one subject is at 68%.

When results come out, you may need your grades as a percentage for internships and jobs. Our CGPA to percentage guide covers every major board and university.

Frequently asked questions

How many classes do I need to attend to get 75%?

Attend 3 × held − 4 × attended more classes in a row. With 56 of 80, that's 240 − 224 = 16: attend the next 16 and you reach 72 of 96, exactly 75%.

How many classes can I miss and stay at 75%?

Divide classes attended by 0.75 and subtract classes held, then round down. With 90 of 100, that's 120 − 100 = 20 classes.

Does medical leave count as attendance?

Usually not as present. But a medical certificate submitted on time is the main basis for condoning a shortage, so always hand it in when you return.

Is 74.5% rounded up to 75%?

It depends on your institution. Many don't round at all, so aim to stay a few classes above 75%.

Can CBSE allow less than 75%?

Only in genuine, documented cases, such as a medical emergency or national-level sport. CBSE can relax the rule by up to 25%, and only if your school submits the case.
