How to Convert CGPA to Percentage (CBSE, VTU, AKTU, GTU and More)

Every board and university's formula, a ready conversion table, and which number to put on job and admission forms.

By Team Vind · Updated · 5 min read

Your marksheet shows a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) out of 10, but the job form or admission portal asks for a percentage. There is no single national formula. CBSE, Anna University, VTU, AKTU and GTU each use their own, and the same CGPA can mean anything from 77.5% to 85%. Here's which formula applies to you, and which number to put on an application.

The formulas, board by board

The most common rule is CBSE's CGPA × 9.5. Many engineering universities multiply by 10, and some subtract a small amount first. Here's each one, with what an 8.5 CGPA becomes:

Board or universityFormula8.5 CGPA =
CBSE / Delhi UniversityCGPA × 9.580.75%
Anna University and othersCGPA × 1085%
GTU, Gujarat(CGPA − 0.5) × 1080%
VTU, 2015–2018 schemes(CGPA − 0.75) × 1077.5%
AKTU, UP(CGPA − 0.75) × 1077.5%
Newer VTU schemes use CGPA × 10. Universities can change their rules by scheme or year.

Why CBSE multiplies by 9.5

When CBSE graded Class 10 results as CGPA (under the CCE scheme, roughly 2010 to 2017), it looked at how students in the top band actually scored. Students with the top grade, A1 (91–100 marks), averaged about 95%. That's 9.5 times the top grade point of 10, so CBSE set the indicative percentage at CGPA × 9.5. Delhi University and many other universities use the same rule.

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5  ·  e.g. 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%

Engineering universities

  • Anna University and many others: CGPA × 10.
  • GTU (Gujarat): (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, so 8.0 becomes 75%.
  • VTU (2015–2018 schemes) and AKTU (UP): (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so 8.0 becomes 72.5%. Newer VTU schemes use CGPA × 10.
  • Mumbai University and SPPU (Pune) don't use a single multiplier. Mumbai withdrew its formula in January 2026 and issues the percentage on request, and SPPU uses grade-band equations. Use the figure on your marksheet or ask the university.

Going the other way: percentage to CGPA

Reverse the formula. On the CBSE rule, divide by 9.5: 76% is 76 ÷ 9.5 = 8 CGPA. For GTU, divide by 10 and add 0.5. The percentage to CGPA calculator does every scale for you.

From semester SGPAs to CGPA

If you only have semester SGPAs, combine them first. Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of the SGPAs, not a simple average, because semesters with more credits count for more. Then convert that CGPA. The SGPA to CGPA calculator handles the weighting.

Frequently asked questions

What is 9 CGPA in percentage?

85.5% on the CBSE rule (9 × 9.5), 90% on the × 10 rule, 85% for GTU and 82.5% for AKTU and VTU's older schemes.

Is CGPA × 9.5 valid for all universities?

No. It's CBSE's rule, also used by Delhi University and many others, but each university sets its own. Check your marksheet or your university's notification.

Is 7 CGPA first class?

On the CBSE rule, 7 CGPA is 66.5%, and on the × 10 rule it's 70%, so it's first class (60% and above) either way. Some universities define classes by CGPA directly, so check yours.

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

Use the same formula as for CGPA at your university. If you need an overall figure, first combine the semester SGPAs into a credit-weighted CGPA.
